Distance avoiding an attack and countering an attack is very important in any martial arts. From distance we can counter attack, avoiding attack, safety measure, and preparation for next movement. All this are done with a blink of an eye. In order to have an accurate and good reaction a person has to be taught and understand the philosophy deeply. An instructor role is to develop this understanding to his students. When talking about distance, how do we calculate distance from a martial arts view?
|Measuring The Distance|
In Silat Seni Gayong distance are calculated from the arms. The measures of the arm are taught during training. It was measured by straighten the hand towards the partner and measure was taken from the partner body. After measuring was done both practitioner will proceed to mastering a techniques. And this method was repeated until they are really skillful. By only measuring the arm does not countable that we will have the perfect range. It has to be combining with footwork. In Silat Seni Gayong when practising with a partner the student are taught the techniques of attacking and avoiding an attack. No matter what before performing the act the distance must be taken to making sure the student will be skilled in calculating the distance in spontaneous.
|Attacking and Defending Position Distance|
When trained with partners either one has to exchange their position from attacking and countering an attack. For a student who is attacking one of the feet must be position at the back in a 45 degree from the other foot. The other will stay in horizontal position waiting for an attack. When the attack was made by stepping forward the people who are countering an attack must avoiding the attack and changes the position of standing to parallel by stepping the foot backwards. If the distance measurements were taken before the attack countering will be accurate. By the time the position of the body will precisely as the same level with the attacker forearm and the distance is closer.

Having a closer distance is an advantage, at this position various kind of countering attack can be done and the attacker is trap in his position. Silat Seni Gayong is a martial art for closed counter fighting from various angles whether barehanded or weapons.
