          Syrian Arab Republic is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and Mediterranean sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east and Palestine to the southeast and Jordan to the south. The capital city is Damascus also known as Syam in the old days are one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The country has a significant historical sites all of which are respectfully maintained by the authorities. The ancient city of Damascus, Aleppo and Bosra are all listed on Unesco's World Heritage list, as is the sensationally beautiful ruined city of Palmyra. Excellent to offer such as mighty crusaders castle, labyrinthine , medieval souqs, jewel like Ummayad house and mosque.

          The populations of Syria predominately Arab with large minorities from other ethnic group, Kurds, Armenians and Turks. The official language are Arabic but other tongues that occasionally understood. With mixture of ethnics and crossroad of civilizations , though often described as the cradle of civilisations. It has been the bridge connecting the cultures of Eastern Mediterraneans and Fertile Crescent, and the beginning of silk road joining the West with East. It is where Assyrian , Sumerian, Phoenician, Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek and Roman empires and culture met and influences each other.

         On the other contrary, Syria contributed as a developing knowledge centre , during the era of those great empires. In this nations, discovered the secrets of Agriculture, Metallurgy, and invented the very first alphabet. Syria the ancient, father of alphabet which was started with 30 letter Semitic , which form the basis for the Greek alphabet, and therefore the languages of the western world was a significant contributions and legacy to human civilisations.  Religious, philosophies, language of trade , systems of urban development, all were developed in the ancient geographical Syria.

   

Food In Tunisia

            The Tunisian cuisine combines of Arabic, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and French influences and dessert dwellers culinary traditions. Tunisian cuisine based mainly on olive oil , spices, tomatoes , seafood and meat primarily lamb.Tunisia food is quite spicy. You can find bread and pastries seems it was French legacy. Dishes are cooked with olive oil, spice with aniseed, coriander, cumin, cinnamon or saffron , many are accompanied by harissa , a chilli and garlic condiment.

          Couscous is the national dishes of the Tunisian. The dish is cooked differently in various part of Tunisia . To cooked this dish a special utensils called the couscousiere. Vegetable and meat are cooked in the lower part of the utensils while the grain is cooked in the upper part.Other dishes such as Chorba, soup with lots of pepper, Bouza, rich and sticky sorghum and hazelnut cake, Salatta Battata, hot potatoes salad with caraway seed. Tunisian sandwich offers to those who are on a fast move dish along the streets and you can find everywhere this easy going dish.

       Tunisian cuisine has the influence of many culture and civilization . Tunisian emphasize on fresh and wholesome ingredients and all the recipes which are prepared usually used natural products and high quality ingredients. Frozen food usually are not preferred by the Tunisian. Although there are traditional food serving you also can find Italian food such as Pizza, Pasta, Spaghetti in many parts of restaurants. As a food lover you can choose the taste you need based on traditional and modern cuisine that serve the Tunisian nations.

Last Round

            It has been a long stay in Tunis. I will be going on my next adventure to another place spreading Silat Seni Gayong. Before leaving I take this opportunities to do some shopping for souvenoirs to make as a memorable gift for my trip. Always a must everywhere I step into a new or old places I will buy something for memories. Nevertheless taking a photo as well, because there's always something new things happening where ever you visited and changes to the place although you have visited it many times.

           I take my chance to strolling around Tunis city again, especially medina , the place where you can get and choose and make bargain on souveniors or cultural products produce by the Tunisian. Most of the item here , such as pottery plate and other things are a one stop center meant for the tourist.. It' s a must to buy a couscous pot , since it was a traditional pot for cooking a special dish called couscous itself. Couscous is a pot with a plate at the bottom covered by like a hat pot which are placed on top.

            Despite doing some shopping I also take that opportunity to take some photos at the city centre. There a lot of historical building such as the theater , the cathedral, the administration building , that should be taken as it's an attraction of Tunis. With this photos memories during my visit to Tunisia will always be etched and can view whats the development that gone to happen in Tunisia in the next future. My visit to this land of Hannibal going to be a memorable and feel very proud that Gayong has spread its wings again in this Northern land of Africa. Hopefully Gayong will remain after this and spread to it's neighbouring countries. InsyaAllah.

Streets Of Tunis

Hammamet

            Hammamet is a town in Tunisia and popular with its beaches and swimming and water sports. Located in the south east of  the northern peninsular of cap Bon , on the northern edge of the Gulf of Hammamet. What make Hammamet atrraction is that central located, with restaurants, hotels, beaches and very easy access. Its a place for tourist spending their time at the beach and activities along the beaches. Hammamet beaches go on for kilometers , and there virtually no point along the coast that doesn't allow swimming. Therefore despite with a heavy loaded of tourist Hammamet maintain the cleanness of the beaches.

Hammamet Medina

          Everywhere in Tunis theres a medina , a place selling souvenirs and cultural products of Tunisian. The medina dates long way back, where its safe living and trade here. Its excellent and the streets offer much authentic experience since souvenir stalls fill most street. Some local economic activity is still visible , mainly dealing with small boat fishing .

            With white washes houses mushrooming surrounding, with a late afternoon colour cascades turn into yellow and orange matched by the blue sea, it was a spectacular view. Hammamet consists of old and new, old such as Kasbah a historical castle along to walk with. The new Hammamet modern town is truly all about tourism, with pedestrian friendly streets and boulevards lined with restaurants and shops. Hammamet is so huge place where it comprise of the old and modern traditions and a place for all sort of ages strolling, visiting, entertainment and pleasure facing the Mediterranean blue coloured ocean.

Gayong Tunisia Training

            Leisure and training, as usual the students take the opportunity training with me. They wishes to feel training conducted by me.  About 25 students turn up for the training, consists of various range of ages. Seven of them are at the age under 12 and the rest are teenager and senior personnel. Training with us at the same time and date are Karate practitioners. We are located at the back hall while them at the front hall separated by a wall.

           The warming up exercise are conducted by Donia , a working lady and I wanted her to assist on the warming up because I wanted her to be prepared to be an instructors. It took her about 30 minutes to finish the routine and to perspire all the students. Its my turn , since that the class are consists of various ages , so I have to round the students into few groups according to their level.
 

In Training

           We started up the fundamental movements, fall from the the basics exercise as we named it " Senaman Anak Harimau Satu " . All the students that attended the training was stunt upon hearing my command and they felt enthusiastic by it. According to their word , straight hair are felt all over the body and my sound of command are like a roar of a tiger. This the first time they had these kind of affect and they felt very excited , and made their adrenalin running high. Their excitement does not stop there, but was shared by others spectators who soundly heard of the volume of the direction and the roaring.
 
         We continued by the techniques of grappling and avoiding attack. I signify and stabilize what they have learn previously from their instructor Wadie Zoghlamy , which are my students. Make the students exhilarated and experiencing live training with the so called Malay instructor. Most of the students take the time to ask a questions, which they have doubt all this time and definitely they got satisfactory answer.

          Nevertheless, we finish the training with a brotherhood camaraderie and the infinite satisfaction of the training received. As usual everywhere I teach we will end up at a coffee shop at the end of the session chatting and laughing , which make we feel near and comfort, feeling as brothers and sisters of Silat Seni Gayong, thats the main course of it. Kairouan

            Kairouan or Qayrawan means camp in Arabic. Historical relate that the Arabs conquest the region of North Africa. Establishing military posts at regular interval along his route and decided to encamped at the present day Kairouan. Starting as a military camp, Kairouan become the greatest Muslim city in North Africa.. During these centuries, the city became one of the most important cultural centers in the Arab world, witnessing the flowering of sciences , literature and the arts. Kairouan grew in size and beauty and no where was this more evident than in the construction and continuing elaboration of its Great Mosque.

           The Great Mosque of Kairouan also known as Sidi Oqba mosque, takes the general form of rectangle. The enormous space contains the prayer hall, a courtyard and a minaret. The minaret is three stories tall, with it lowest stories composed of stone block taken from classical Roman buildings. The minaret build from 724 to 728AD is the oldest standing minaret in the world and is widely recognised as one of the greatest gems of Islamic architecture.

          The old town of Kairouan has fascinated many artists. Its derived from the tight network of little streets, passageways, archways, and fluted cupolas with a mellow whiteness, all blending in beneath the protection of the Great Mosque. The souqs are dedicated to commerce divided up according to traders and are constant buzz of activity. All around these historic neighbourhoods the light brick crenulated ramparts punctuated by towers and bastions succeed in giving the old town the venerable experience of standing outside of time, Kairouan is a fascinating and welcoming secret of Tunisia and with that one of the jewel of Tunisian heritage.

Carthage

           Carthage refers to a series of Phoenician cities on the Gulf Of Tunis. The first civilisation that developed within the city's sphere of influence is referred to as Punic or Carthaginian. Located on the eastern site of lake Tunis across from the centre of Tunis. Carthage was built on a promontory with inlets to the sea to the north and south. The strategic location made it master of the Mediterranean's maritime trade. Between Sicily and the coast of Tunisia , all ships that crossing the sea had to pass this great power and influence city of Carthage.

          Carthage was one of the largest cities in Hellenistic time , with massive walls measuring 23 miles in length. The walls located on the shore and never been penetrated, as the Carthaginian control of the sea that made attack from the direction are difficult.

          The city's town planning comprises of burial ground , religious area, market places, council house , towers and a theater and was divided into four equal size residential area with the same layout. In the middle of the city stood high citadel called the Byrsa.
 

Saint Louis Cathedral

          Saint Louis Cathedral or the Byrsa  is an old Roman Catholic cathedral located in Carthage Tunisia. Situated on the peak of  Byrsa hill , and was built by the French in 1890 and dedicated to the 13th century saint king who died on the shores of Carthage in 1290. Today it's only used for cultural centers.

         What a great city's and civilization , Carthage stands as the historical sites although it has been destroyed during the era of the Roman due to the possibilities of being a rival for the empire . History can't be changed, the ruins and still preserved standing monuments prove Carthage was a  significant center for art and culture in this land of the Hannibal's, Tunisia.

Berbers Of Tunisia

            Essentially the Berbers were a nomadic people who roamed the lands of Tunisia, Libya, Morocco and Algeria, following the seasons over their time honoured route. Berbers comprise a clear majority of the population of North Africa in terms of race , but in terms of identity, a considerable minority.

            The Berber communities are scattered around in the North African countries. They often lived in a mountains and in smaller settlements.The Berbers village in Tunisia are mainly in the Southern part of the country. The hilltop villages are a good example of their wish for protection against invaders , show the initial development of semi-permanent communal living , and the underground villages which were established to provide protection from the heat of this dry arid land.  There are around 300 local dialects among the Berbers. Berbers are Muslim but there are many traditional practice found among them. Throughout history Berbers have founded several dynasties such as Numidia , Carthage , Almohads and strong enough to threaten countries in Europe.

           Berbers are as good as many carpets producer. Their handmade carpets are thick and made of long hair sheep wool. They are white or beige with or without motives. Motives are in warm colour and various shapes , but generally discreet.

           Overall Berbers once ruled the Northern land of Africa. Their mixed and evolutions between the nation has made Berbers who live scattered across North Africa whose genetically different from their neighbours are not well established. But one thing for sure that the Berbers has contribute in many ways in history , culture , nations in the Northern Land Of North Africa.

        

Silat Seni Gayong Belt Ceremony

           We had a belt grading few days back, and as promised and planned a belt delivery ceremony will be commensurated. Earlier the Silat Seni Gayong of Tunisia practitioners had their grading in the category or level of Red, Green and White belt. And usually after such test and for a pass students they have the right to received a belt accordingly.

           Silat Seni Gayong started with White belt for the first stages and grading can be done after six month in training at this level. Second belt is the Green belt, and need to have another six month to hold this belt after a test. That also goes for the Red and a belt forward the test became more tougher until the holder of a Black belt.

            In Silat Seni Gayong after each test , to deliver a belt we must do in a manner and discipline etihics of  Silat Seni Gayong. At this level a practitioner who will received the belt in a ceremony will have to show his respect when appear in front of those who deliver. He or She had to hold both hand at the centre of the chest and walked at least between three to seven steps towards , and the steps took depends on the ranking of the deliverer. Upon reaching , the student has to bend his right knee and straighten both hands towards the deliverer. And the delivery will act upon it. The student stand up and steps backwards as per his previous act.

Dougga

Dougga Heritage Sites

             Dougga is an ancient city of the Roman in northern Tunisia. Situated in the mountain inland of Tunisia, in an area that was densely populated by the Numidians. The city served as one of the capitals of Massinissa, an Roman ally, and one of contenders to Carthage. It first as an important military post and with the arrival of the Roman it became the regional administrative centre. The whole area is about 3km square and among the most important ruins of the Roman era. The capitol of Dougga is one of the most impressive remain from the Roman era. Built in 166 CE, its 10metre high walls stand almost like the day it was inaugerated.

          Walking around Dougga note the pavement with its herring bone pattern. The quality of the work is quite impressive , and quite a high percentage of modern stonemasons would blush if they would investigate the ancient skills.

           There are plenty of houses of  Dougga, and they can roughly be divided  into two types. Carthaginian had entrance leading into a court, then with the entrance to the side into the dwelling quarters. Roman on the other hand , had direct access into the dwelling quarters.

          The cisterns of Dougga are impressive, was a fabulous system for providing Dougga with steady water deliverances. The system, where there were seven vaulted chambers , each were constructed to have no leakage. Each chamber was separate from the others, so that problems with one would not lead to stop in water deliveries. Water was delivered by aqueduct , as it is in this part of the world, little or no water was carried in the summer.

          It was estimated around 20 to 30,000 persons lived here during the era, and shops , stores , baths , latrines, wash room , gymnasiums bring them to life. Stone streets bear the grooves of chariot wheels and in the silent , wind swept afternoon one can almost hear their clatter.

The Ruins Of Ancient Roman City Of  Dougga

         Dougga or Thugga is perhaps among the most touching of the 200 or more Roman sites in Tunisia as one cannot help the feeling it stands. In the sixth century the Byzantine conquered the area as part of their reconquest of the old Roman provinces and held it until seventh century when it was lost along with the rest of the province to the Islamic invasion. In 1997 Dougga was recognised as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO , believing that it represents the best preserved Roman small town in North Africa.

Sidi Bou Said

            Located 20km north east of Tunis. Sidi Bou Said got its name from Abou Said ibn Khalief, is a blue and white village, gaily perched on the cliff overlooking the Bay of Tunis.Following the cobblestone streets winding upwards we will catch the glimpse of the emerald sea with the mountain of Bou Kornine and the southern beaches of Tunis across the Bay.

           We visited Sidi Bou Said in the evening, seems that it was spring and it getting dark a little earlier. Upon reaching Sidi Bou Said the place is already turning into a night walkway. Although its at night but the visitors keep coming to feel the different scenery of the place.

           We had a drink at Cafe de Nattes, sip and sit a green tea with mint while laughing and chatting. I still remember my students Wadie Zoghlami making an order when the waiter asked upon it. He asked for a Red Tea , me and Yahya Alam my other students laughed and making that as a joke that night. What ever we talked about definitely the Red Tea things comes out. And those joke continuing over and over until we really satisfied for the laughter.

           Cafe de Nattes is a cafe at the sloop of of Sidi Bou Said. A must stopped place for anyone visited the place and its a place of relax while having a green tea . Its not easy to get a sit at this cafe , you have to queue due to the main attracted and great location at the place.

          What make Sidi Bou Said so  attractive is that is still a living village.Many of the inhabitants work with international and national visitors, but usually they are local families with long histories here . The thing about Sidi Bou Said is that you have to climb to the top to get access to the sea below. Or we may enjoy the stunning views over the Gulf of Tunis, flanked by the mountains behind Hammam Lif.

The Blue Door, Attraction of The Village

          At the foot of the cliffs lies the Port of Sidi  Bou Said , a modern marina with restaurants and hotels. The marina is quite good, and walking around we will pass a couple of yachts big as houses.The stairs going down the mountain where the village itself lies, goes through green and luscious vegetation. The best thing to do here is relaxing while having tea at one of  their nice cafes .

First Silat Seni Gayong Grading

            As plan earlier I will conduct a grading for the first time, for the student of Silat Seni Gayong Tunisia. My student Wadie Zoghlami which had been appointed as an instructor by me will have his students tested by, whether they are qualified to wear Red Belt ( bengkong pelangi merah kosong), Green Belt ( bengkong pelangi hijau) or White Belt ( bengkong awan puith). Wadie Zoghlami had a training in Silat Seni Gayong solely by myself since last few years back. The day he started training with me at Malaysia , and continuing training with me when he is back home. Now he is producing his own students and a blessing from me on his act.

           The history is making, because the first time Gayong really spread its wings in the land of Tunisia. Before this in the late year of 1979 and 1988 , there's a Tunisian learned Silat Seni Gayong but the outcome of students are not that drastic as this time. The test went smoothly and overall the students did their level best to perform in the test.

The Grading

          Although there are still a lot of loop holes in training to cover up especially in the art of jumping and leaping and on the avoiding techniques and the fundamental stances and movements, but for a beginner they have done their best and I am hopping in future they do event better.

The Grading

              At the end of the grading session, the students who sit for the test hoovering in their mind whether they had make it or not. While I counting the result they talked to each other on their performance. Although I don't understand what they are murmuring about, but from their face I know that they are impatient to get the result. As the calculations is over and I'm ready to make the announcement. Everyone keeping silence concentrating them self on what my comments are on the recent grading. Finally each of the students grinned , of the result they are getting and I did make some speech to motivated them to do even better in training and grading on the coming future and congratulate to those who has pass the test and a great experience for the new students that attended the session together.

           Once the announcements had been made , we immediately discussed the ceremony of handing over the belt for those who had passed. They are in a hurry because they wanted to take the opportunity while I'm around to commensurate the belt convey ceremony. I just looked upon the temperament of all of them including my representatives instructors conducting the so called conference. We all finish our day with a satisfaction , respectively.

End Session

City of Tunis

            Day started early for me today, although I haven't sound asleep last night but I woke up with  a full of energetic zest. Looking at the corridor seeing people passing by and have some geographical moment at the place I'm staying, cause unable to do it upon arriving last night. We are going to the city, Tunis the capital of Tunisia , this morning  to have our view of the most northern African country.

           We took a taxi , and about 15 to 20 minute we reached the capital city. As normal the structure and arrangements of the shops here are not less than the country that have been colonized this northern Arabs , the French. Most of the set up much French and I was told that French influence in their life and political are so great.

           Typical French life style and most of Mediterranean states, where they have cafe at the pathways , people sitting , chatting along the way. A common description you can see in Tunis like any other Mediterranean neighboring country. The people are lovely , the building are French architecture leverage, and you feel the cozy of the city .

          I was taken to the gymnasium where Gayong had their training. It was rented gym and the administration of the gym taking care of all the necessary things for the gym user from the fees until the facility. I heard that the gym charge for the used of the facility around 60 Tunisian Dinar per person. And this fees is share with the instructor who conducted a class there. From the entrance we can see Van Damn picture as a signboard of the gymnasium. It is very convenience because it's located in the middle of the city and by side of a tramp line. In the gym everything were provided from locker, shower, hall etc for the satisfaction of the users.

          All day I spend time with the student of Silat Seni Gayong and have a chat and drink at a restaurants about 10 minutes from the gym and talking about Gayong history and so on. After office , many came to join the meeting and we sit at the cafe until 7pm getting to know each other and everyone trying to participate to make the group more alive. Everyone dispersed after the introductory session and leaving one by one back to their home.

        We took a taxi again , and what surprised me that the taxi driver didn't know the location of our house. And its becomes more confused , my students Wadie Zoghlami which are local Tunisian are tribulate of the way to the house. I have to take action and lucky that I have memories the way when we are going to the city in the morning. We reached the house safely and for me me it was and embarrassing moment for the taxi driver. Therefor we must prepared for uncertainty circumstances.

Black Panther Odyssey To The Land Of Hannibal

            In year 2005 , I plan my trip to Tunisia. After a few email exchanging and phone called finally I decided to fly to the land of Hannibal, Tunisia. Before flying over to Tunis, I stopped at Damascus, because my student Yahya Alam from Damascus wanted to come along. For me Damascus is not extraneous, I have been there almost every year. It was spring that time and the weather is good.

           Upon reaching Damascus, both of us booked a ticket on Tunisair. Tunisair is a national carrier for Tunisia. We booked the noon flight and expected to reached Tunis in the evening. What surprising me with Tunisair is the hospitality they serve during the flight. It was shook of the day, and I have not had this kind of   experiences through my frequent flying with any airlines. , a shameful behavior shown by the air hostess. It's happen when the air hostess serve a meal on board, and unlucky passenger was asking a beef meal instead of a chicken. And I was shocked to hear that the air hostess scolded him and told him that that they only have chicken and if you want it you can have it, that's all we have and she threw the meal tray to the meal holder at the seat. This is very rude attitude and I was stunt with the mannerism.

          Anyway we landed safely at Tunis Airport. Waiting for us at the airport are my student Wadie Zoghlami and his brother. We were taken to his another brothers house about an hour drive from the airport to spend our night there. At that time its already 7pm in the evening, my jetlag from my previous traveling has not been adjusted. I have got used of it since, that I have been traveling all over the continents since the last 10 years. It was  a good experience gaining, if we had a lot of places to visit and interest , and for myself spreading Silat Seni Gayong to the world are my pleasure. I did this because I wanted Gayong to stand as same level as other martial arts and obtain the same recognitions as others or even better. Therefor as my promised to the late Founder Meor Abdul Rahman and his beneficiary of trust the late Cikgu Siti Kalsom to spread Silat Seni Gayong to the world is not and easy task. I think I try to did my level best and beyond my power to do so , on my on expenses due to the love of this art.

         Upon reaching the house I was put at the hall for me to sleep, while my students Yahya Alam and Wadie Zoghlami  were located at a room. For me any where that I can lay my head and take a good sleep , will do find, for as long as my mission to spread Gayong accomplished. That night I went to sleep quite early around 10am, although I can said that I'm sleeping but I still heard of my two students talking until I guess 4am in the morning.

            Tunisia is a magnificent country with a large scale culture and historical appeal. Tunisia is located at the northern most point of the African continent . Its a small country and all destinations within Tunisia can be reached in a day's drive. Tunisia is covered by mountains in the northern part and flat land in the south. Tunisia is bordered in the southeast by Libya and in the west by Algeria. Most of the populations are concentrated in the northern parts and in the south are left lonely which is composed of the Sahara desert.

            Most of the people speak Arabic , but French are widely spoken. Most Tunisian are bilingual and speak both  languages. Only a small percentage speak Berber , and English and Italian are commonly spoken especially in the commercial activities.

         About 99% of the populations is Muslim, although have a minority Christian, which is made up of Roman Catholics, members of the Greek Orthodox Church, and French and English Protestants. In addition there is a small population of Sephardic Jews living in Tunisia.
 
       Tunis as the capital of Tunisia, and a culture center which you can found at Medina ( old town ) . Generally it is a combination of souvenir shops  and historical archeological structures. Medina is like common Arabs country which are popular Arabs bazaar or souks. The souks generally selling bargain items such as wonderful local crafts, including olive wood carvings. embroidered clothing , enameled jeweler and woven and knotted carpets. Also can be found Berber handmade crafts such as silver bracelets and necklace, ceramics tiles and pottery, engraved cooper and brass articles, leather ware , antiques, statues and ancient coins.
 

       Tunisia has many interesting place to visit , a place of  historic and magnificent panorama facing the Mediterranean sea and entertainment and knowledgeable interest. A place like Sidi bol Said where beautiful structure and design of houses facing the Mediterranean. Hammamet  a coastline for relaxing and enjoy the cozy climates and ancient mosques ,and  ruined of the Romans and the nature and life of  the Bedouin Berber.

           I took my day by window shopping at famous Harbour Town. It located at Biggera Waters , south of Brisbane and heading towards the Gold Coast. Harbour Town is a destination that bring over 120 outlet stores together, making it easy to find  fashion , shoes, and much more on sales everyday. Most of the outlet here selling branded item such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Adidas, Nike and etc.

          The outlet shopping is the Harbour Town famous for but there's also a number of regular stores including a supermarket and services such as hairdresser , chemist and a Bunning stores. As well as alfresco cafes, restaurants and cinema to make a total entertainment experience.

Australian Aboriginal

            Aboriginal Australian were known for elaborate paintings on rock and bark. This shows the keen interest of Australians in art music also had its birth during the ancient Aboriginal era. And today music play the central role in both social life and religious life of the people of Australia. Religious song carry a  belief  that goes back many centuries when Aboriginal spirits called the Dreamtime sang songs to create living things on the earth, so the tradition is still continuing today and song are sung to ensure the survival of plants and animals.
