Seni Gulung

“Seni Gulung” or “Seni Tapak Kunci Hidup” as the terms applied in Silat Seni Gayong. What is these terms referred too? Is it a part of movements, techniques, application or a kind of defence method? All of the defined are correct. What is the significant of “Seni Gulung”? Gulung in Malay words can be define as a conclusion of something or any kind of standing or opinion, and this definition applies to  the meaning in Silat Seni Gayong.

When a student has learnt and been taught the art techniques of “Seni Tapak Kunci Mati” and mastered of the “langkah” or foot works, they should be able to apply “Seni Gulung” in their next movements. “Seni Gulung” is a way of escaping from grappling or striking using the natural structure of the body. An example is an arm or hand been grasp or lock, with the understanding of “Seni Gulung” an escape techniques could be applied. These methods of application are played in pairs and whoever mastered the art can considered an expert of the movements. In the heir days it was played until one of the pairs getting hold or unable to get lose or escape from the lock considered a loser.

The gracious movements sometimes are played with many participants. Whether it been applied with bare hand or with a weapon. The reason for having this method is to master each student defending themselves on regards any situations. Perhaps a situation where been grasping or been striking in a single fight or in numerous attack.

Many students didn’t take seriously of the art in “Seni Gulung” because they maybe consider the art is just for a demonstration or for entertaining the audience. It can be said simply choreograph and thinking that it is like fun making the crowd cheered. It’s easy to choreographs but one who really knowledgeable in Silat Seni Gayong can recognised the play whether it considered really a Silat Seni Gayong movements or else. Everything has a secret identification and so does “Seni Gulung” in Silat Seni Gayong. In order to know the secret students should seek the knowledge from their authorised and really authorised instructor. Authorised bring the meaning not capable only to teach but capable of managing the key to the secret.

Understanding “Seni Gulung” is very important and the significant of the art mastered are considered one of the method of feeling the real art of Silat Seni  Gayong. The movement of “Seni Gulung”highlighted the mastering of each practitioner. Sit and think deeply of this great movement and take a chance and time of mastering it.
