Seni Harimau Kumbang

While searching what topic to be share, with all the interest Silat Seni Gayong readers seeking for the knowledge, I was asked by some anak Gayong to write about Seni Harimau Kumbang. To fulfill his request here is what I was told about this art. 

What is Seni Harimau Kumbang?

Seni Harimau Kumbang is another art of the cat family, of techniques using all natural tools of the human body to apply striking and the blows are targeted to the nerve point. A striking leaving no blood and leave the prey lying stiff dead. Also known as Pukulan Maut Harimau Kumbang, these devastating striking techniques are rarely discussed and talk among the practitioners.

There are 21 techniques of this art where number 21 represent the hulubalang, an old Malay custom in numbers. It represent as well 21 steps of the famous Malacca warrior. Although the target areas are based on the nerve point, Seni Harimau Kumbang or Pukulan Maut Harimau Kumbang also targeted to the joint of the body using all the tools possible. The techniques are done with full agility, full accuracy that will destroy the aggressor rapidly.

Seni Harimau Kumbang is a techniques starting with a knuckle or in Gayong terms as emas sepukal with a counted distance of making the blow a deadly whether by hard or soft. It is a technique of cunning movement and a speed of untouchable between each of the continuous application.

Pukulan Maut Harimau Kumbang is a technique with an attack high and low, leaping and turning, and target vulnerable area in a high speed pursuit. It is rarely demonstrate and rarely taught among the practitioners. A well knowledgeable guru has this knowledge and maybe it is not time to share with their student or maybe has been share only to the loyal student.

There is a terms or name on each techniques such as Terkam Harimau,Sepak Harimau and so on.  For an example of the techniques, foot forward applying emas sepukal ,sambar jerung,humban mayat, silang dayong ( not a complete application set of movement). I share this with the not complete terms in the movement purposely because to preserve the secret of the art. For those who are interested of knowing you may have to visit, to learn from the guru that still preserve this knowledge.

The best mode of understanding this art is feeling the techniques by itself. Reading is a method to open the mind for a better understanding. I hope with this exposure will keep us the phase of understanding more of our beloved art. Until then happy seeking and training.

Pecahan Tapak Satu Perkongsian

Terhenti langkah seketika, teringat kembali saat berlatih dahulu,kini dan selamanya.Topik yang hendak dikongsikan adalah mengenai pecahan. Setelah kita mempelajari perkara asas Silat Seni Gayong, pemahaman kita diteruskan dengan pecahan tapak.

 Apakah pecahan tapak ini? 

Pecahan tapak ini adalah satu kaedah pemahaman tentang aspek olahan gerak laku dari kaedah pembelaan dalam konteks falsafah Silat Seni Gayong. Apa yang perlu difahami disini adalah tentang Tapak Gayong ini.Ada kaedah mengenal pasti akan pola Tapak Gayong ini,bukan dengan mudah untuk memecahkannya. Tidak menjadi persoalan jika masih juga ingin memecahkannya tetapi keaslian tapak tersebut akan hilang dan keberkesanan pola seterusnya akan pudar.

Amat mudah untuk memecahkannya tetapi jika tiada pemahaman akan menjadi sukar sepenuhnya dan ianya akan menjadi sumbang. Bukan sahaja sumbang dari segi langkah sahaja malah ia akan berkait dengan pukulan maupun kuncian yang bakal kita lakukan.

Pemahaman formula tentangnya adalah amat penting dan kata kekunci itu menjadi panduan kepadanya.Kita mengambil contoh dalam melakukan Seni Tapak Kunci Mati yang dinamakan sebagai Sawa Berendam.Kita mudah mengaplikasikannya mungkin ,kerana latihan yang kita sering jalankan,

TETAPI apabila melakukan pecahan kuncian ini adakah ianya menepati piawaian asas yang ada padanya. Langkahnya,tangkapannya,kunciannya,jaraknya, kaedah memusnahnya dan itu dan ini. Hanya yang diberi kenal manikam sahaja berupaya melakukannya kerana SENI pemahaman Gayong itu telah tersemat dijiwanya.Ibarat tersematnya lambang naga disisi kiri bajunya.

Ada satu kaedah yang amat penting dalamnya yang mana perlulah dicari dari guru yang arif tentangnya.Tulisan ini sekadar pembuka minda buat yang mencari agar dapat kekal keasliannya. Dalam erti kata melihat sekali sahaja lenggoknya kita sudah dapat mengenal pasti keasliannya dan kalaulah ianya sudah jelas aslinya tindakan susulan seperti kuncian dan pukulan tidak akan dapat kita sangkal lagi dan pastilah asli juga jadinya.

Kesilapan yang kerap dilakukan adalah kerana fahaman kita yang sejengkal hendak dijadikan sedepa. Kaedah aslinya kita masih kabur masih tercari-cari dan tertanya-tanya. Apabila ini berlaku maka perbuatan kita itu akan hilang nilai-nilai Seni Gayongnya.Mungkin kita berasa puas hati atasnya tetapi pada dasarnya ia tersasar dari formula rahsianya.

Kalau sudah mengenalnya tidak akan ada nada negatif malah boleh duduk serumpun bersama memeriahkan suasana lengok langkah bersahut bersambut.

Super Combat- The Reveal

Starting with Tapak Gayong continued with Seni Gayong is a terms of understanding total philosophy of Gayong. In those two terms there are techniques name as Serangan Maut or Serangan Harimau and also known as combat. This movement of techniques taught the student on speed and time to react upon been attack and not to forget the timing and distance. After mastering those techniques they are brought over to a technique terms as Super Combat.

What is Super Combat? 

Super Combat is an art of striking which shows a high level of striking techniques. Why the definition does state such a remarks? The striking in Super Combat is advance techniques concentrate on agility, accuracy and destroy. It teaches agility in movement, agility in striking, agility in countering and agility in escaping. It strikes accurately to a vulnerable point to the body with a single blow. Those combinations will destroy the aggressor as quick as it can between 2 to 4 seconds.

As told to me the beginning stages the students are exposed to what it terms as combat. In the syllabubs of Silat Seni Gayong the techniques are taught in the category of Tapak Gayong. Why does the arrangement are in that manner? It is to prepare the student for an advance movement. With familiarisation of the application hoping that it will become easy when exposed the art of Super Combat which are in the category of Seni Gayong.

Most of the techniques taught in combat are just shown how to do a striking and are not explained where the striking should take place. For example in Combat one “Patah Dayong Nasi Hangit”, most of the time we view a strike to the back of the body and some time to the back of the neck and the moves continued. In Super Combat the strike should be point to a sinew situated near the ear leaf or in Malay it terms as “urat gila”. With a strike to this point in a single blow the aggressor will fainted. In Super Combat the time to end the aggression are important especially when countering with many numbers. With an experience and full knowledge the striking some time does not come with a strong blow but enough with a soft touch with a hand that has been lethal.

Another example in the art “Tarian Kuda Gila” , normally we just kick to the body and assumed that the blow is strong and it will stop the aggressor. Do we ever think if the aggressor is as tough as a Spanish Bull.? I remembered the late Dato  Meor mentioned, quote, “the bigger the better”. What does this mean? It means if we have the knowledge in striking or locking, application of the techniques doesn’t count the size. The kick should be to the west north about a quarter from the left of the rib on the chest. A blow to the point wills takedown the aggressor no matter how big is the size.

I would recommend for those who are really has the high enthusiastic of obtaining the art of Gayong seek and dig until the bowl of the knowledge is fill as per in the emblem assemble a picture of a Malay vase. What I share is through my experience during my time learning the knowledge of Gayong and the explanation and guidance by my beloved teacher and gladly to be shared here for the love of the art.

Ilmu Hikmah Keris Gayong

Berbicara tentang keilmuan keris , bukan hanya sekadar mengetahui kaedah permainan,permulihan,penjagaan malah ia juga merangkumi ilmu hikmah keris. Jarang sekali dan mungkin kita alpa atau terlupa tentangnya. Sambil merenung pengalaman silam terlintas dalam minda aku akan ilmu hikmah ini. Salah satu ilmu hikmah yang berada dalam Silat Seni Gayong.

Sungguh banyak sekali ilmu hikmah Gayong ini sehingga kekadang terlepas pandang.Salah seorang guru yang aku ketahui mempunyai pengalaman ilmu hikmah ini adalah Allahyarham Cikgu Aziz Shariff, yang menjadi tonggak kepimpinan Gayong di Negeri Pahang suatu ketika dahulu. Sebelum itu memang sudah diketahui tentang ilmu hikmah ini semasa aku berkunjung ke Taiping.

Ilmu hikmah keris atau amalan keris ini disusuli dengan doa tertentu sambil menyapu kemenyan pada mata keris tersebut. Doa yang dizahirkan dari AlQuran dan menyatakan kepada yang Haq .Atas IZINNYA tuhan semesta alam, kesannya semirip ilmu kipas nandong, pancung tak bertanya dan ilmu Melayu yang lain.Kalau terbaca atau mendengar kisah bagaimana Arwah Dato Meor membelah pokok pinang begitu jugalah dengan ilmu hikmah keris ini. Cuma kesan serangannya boleh dilihat pada garisan merah atau jalur merah pada sasarannya .

Ini salah satu lagi ilmu hikmah Gayong kuno yang aku teringat untuk berkongsi  sesama anak-anak Gayong semoga menjadi pedoman untuk mengali khazanahnya agar tidak luput suatu masa nanti.Apabila berbicara tentangnya teringat pula pesanan Almarhum Dato Meor yang berbunyi dalam ringkasnya, ilmu Gayong ini berada merata dan berbeza dari setiap individu maka diarahkan kita mencarinya.Mungkin masih ada guru yang mengetahuinya tetapi mungkin terlupa atau menyimpan sebagai panduan dirinya sendiri,  juga mungkin kerana jarang sekali berbicara tentangnya maka lupa ia untuk menyatakannya. Apapun diharap dengan pembukaan tentang ilmu ini semoga ia menjadi pemangkin akan pengumpulan ilmu-ilmu Gayong yang amat jarang sekali diperdebatkan maupun kedengaran.

Semar Alam Tunggal

As written in Malay Saga a quote from the legendary Malay Malacca warrior Hang Tuah when asked about what techniques he applied when defeating the Majapahit warrior, he said,”Datuk gunakan langkahan ibu Gayong sendi gedang tunggal,semar alam tunggal,belah bumi kipas nandong,kipas nandong dalam nandong.” The word with high poetic Malay meaning usually used when explaining something during that era.

What are its meaning and are that kind of techniques still exit or have been extinction. That is for us the modern and newly Malay breed to find out. I am bringing out one of the poetic terms for a discussion and point to ponder. Those quotes are, “semar alam tunggal’.

Semar alam tunggal meaning god is the creator of the whole universe and one of the creation is human. In the philosophy of Gayong it is already introduced from the beginning where all the practitioners are directed to recite AlIkhlas and it is recommended to complete the reciting for 70000 times. The concept and teaching of the said versus are beginning of understanding of the total knowledge before feeding for more.

Starting from been accepting as a Gayong practitioner or student, where how important the adat perlimau are, before and after finishing a training session where how important our way of life are, in a training session show how our life and nature of a human should be, completing by ourselves the said versus for inner training, and the training continue. What has been written here are just an opening and guide for Gayong practitioner on searching for this knowledge? In simple Malay word, “tulisan keterangan ini adalah kiasan yang perlu difikirkan untuk memecahkan ruyungnya”.

Maybe it doesn’t drop in our mind and maybe we don’t have a time for all this, where we shouldn’t have this kind of attitude if we are really seeking for Gayong. Maybe it is a bit complicated to understand for someone but insyaAllah if there is a will there will be a way. Let take some phrase from ilmu Gayong, as an example in the words reciting in a bath, quote, “Allah hu ma kata suci.suci badan ku dalam nur cahaya Muhammad, suci bumi lembaga adam........” and the phrase continued. Another “amalan”, quote, “ kun kata Allah, fayakun kata Muhammad...................nun awan putih melindungi aku, Allah hu Akbar..” Some “amalan” continued for example the phrase, quote, “ la tud riku ab soru wala tud riko......” with AlMighty all those example of “amalan” for the strength of the body, being at a place without been noticed etc. Even it also stated in the poem, quote, “Gayong bercantum bersatu padu....and more , quote, “dengan bismillah mula dikata...”. Those are the steps of understanding the whole package of the knowledge, but the most and most important knowledge to be expressed here is the true understanding of semar alam tunggal. 

Gayong is myself,over there Gayong,here Gayong...”Gayong adalah diri aku sendiri, disana Gayong, disini Gayong...” If we really dig deeply this knowledge all the commotion among us in Gayong could be avoided and the true meaning of Gayong could be applied and belief we will reach the knowledge of the quote, semar alam tunggal. If not, then maybe it will be a daydream where most of us do.
