A walking distance from the souq of Alhamadiyah and near the old city of Damascus lies the grave of the first muezzin of Islam. He is Bilal ibn Rabah. Bilal ibn Rabah is an Ethiopian from Habshah and was known for his beautiful voice with which he called people for their prayers. He has been one of the most trusted and loyal sahaba ( companion ) of the Prophet Muhammad saw and Saidina Ali ibn Abi Talib. Bilal ibn Rabah also carried the spear of the Prophet Muhammad saw , which was used to point the direction of prayer. He died at the age of 61 and was buried in Damascus.

Entrance To The Mausoleum |
I visited Bilal's mausoleum. Its not easy to recognise the mausoleum because its look the same . The graveyard is such a big area and Bilal's grave are located in the middle. There are too many sahaba (companion) of the Prophet Muhammad saw buried here and not to forget as well the family of the Prophet. During the era of the Omayyad empire most of them focus at Damascus. As I reached the mausoleum , I was surprised because the mausoleum are located underground. With a signboard , written a brief history of the late Bilal and an entrance which I have to bend a bit to enter. As I walk down the stairs, which are about 7 to 10 feet under, I saw there's about five graveyard. And after a brief explanation from the mausoleum taker, I understand that the other graveyard are belong to the families of Bilal.

The Tomb Of Bilal Ibn Rabah |
After pray and inspect around the room I make my way out. At the exit entrance which are the same way to enter lies the alms box. The box are made for those to be charitable and that the money can be used to maintain the mausoleum. Bilal is such a meritorious and his sacrifice during his time been remembered until today. May peace be upon him . Amin.
