Machete Full Concept


Silat Seni Gayong early training with mastering the langkah and empty hand techniques consists of grappling, striking etc. Upon mastering it continues in handling the weapons, started with a weapon with the criteria of thrusting, flipping or hacking, combining of those two methods etc. I would like to share with you the art of flipping or hacking using the machete.

In Malay Archipelago there are various kind of machete for various used. The used of machete in self defense of the Malay are also consists of variety of design and purposes. I am only going to share the art of machete in the concept of Silat Seni Gayong. The most important criteria of getting a machete that are suitable to be used are calculated on the length and size of it. The length must be calculated from the size of each individual that was measure from the size of the head. The width of it is at the size of two or two and a half of the fingers size. The important of the size taken is for making it suitable for the user in terms of manoeuvring, weight and handling when it is used. 

After all the measurements and the machete are ready, it was given to the instructor to check. The instructor will recite a doa to neutralise the iron blade so as not to cause a severe injury if any mistake happen during the training. Only a knowledgeable instructor has these abilities, and in the old days of training these steps is apply. Nowadays the traditional way was left out and many of the adat and adap were no longer followed.

Seni Parang

When everything is in order accordingly the students will be taught the art of hacking. It is started with a flipping downwards with a ninety degree horizontal position, vertical, forty five degree position, attacking techniques from top to ground and varieties attacking manoeuvre. Then it continues with avoiding techniques which are related to the attacking movements for making the students familiar working in pairs in a continuously movements.

The art continues with striking, grappling and pairs movements with speed, timing and footwork for the students truly mastering the total concept. The application of training once they had in the unarmed combat helps in this category in making speed, endurance, timing, accuracy etc. 

The training doesn’t stop only on the techniques, it continues in first aid if any unnecessary things happen especially in the pair’s application movements. The method of petua nafas is also taught in order to the students be equip as a master in this art of machete.

Overall the training in the art of machete in Silat Seni Gayong in the heir days is well complete and this style of training has changed nowadays where many only concentrate only part of it. I really hope the style of training in the old days been preserved of making sure as what we called the art of the Malay warrior of Silat Seni Gayong uplifted as it was before.

Kekalkan Tradisi


When referring to the application on spiritual testing in Silat Seni Gayong in the heir days and at present they are great changes. Things that never been done or never made as a test has been add in it. It is good in a sense of knowledge but from my point of view without realising it we are leaving the traditional off slowly. The questions are what went wrong? Or is the knowledge that we had before faded from the hand of ours.

I still remember anywhere any place any time during the heir days when performing the demonstration, the normal spiritual ability or strength show are only, breaking huge log stone on the chest, jumping or rolling on a broken glass and bending the iron rod. Those are the few spiritual abilities only shown to the public. Beside that the testing also circling in hang, drives thru a vehicle on the hand, flip with a machete to the body and so on.

Lately they add breaking a bottle full of water using the palm, which are never been seen or maybe taught by the founder as far as I am concern. Maybe I missed of learning that but I think I am not. The application of breaking a bottle full of water normally is by Kung Fu practitioners in most of their spiritual ability performance. Yes I do agreed it is knowledge and there is no harm or wrong doing it but the questions is the originality of the art itself that I am concerning at.

I would stress why we don’t show our way of the art although we have the capabilities to do various applications. That is the good part of it because with good Silat Seni Gayong training and understanding we can understand whatever kind or way of spiritual abilities no matter from what style.

In all Silat Seni Gayong spiritual abilities there applies the petua and ilmu and this is very significant in the Malay art of the warrior. I made an example here and hoping the readers will understand it. We choose one of Silat Seni Gayong spiritual abilities, bending the iron rod; the secret behind it lies on the iron rod itself and that what we call petua and the additional of ilmu were applied in understanding the origin of it. In the petua there are a point of gravity located on the rod and apply with versus of ilmu, the bending will be done perfectly.

The difference between the Malay spiritual abilities testing is complying with the ilmu and petua, which I presumed petua is science and ilmu is spirituality. Another example, breaking the bottle full of water with hand palm, the water in the bottle will act as a tool moving the oxygen for greater reaction from the air blow form the hand .This reaction generate greater force that broke the bottle. A knowledge great to be known but it is not original Silat Seni Gayong spiritual application.

I am really hoping as a Silat Seni Gayong practitioner, we should hold on our original tradition without leaving others as our additional. We have so many spiritual abilities only a matter of knowing and seeking from a correct person who preserved this kind of secret.

Walking on Hot Charcoal - Testing The Confidence


One of how Silat Seni Gayong testing the spirit of the practitioner is a test walking on hot charcoal. The charcoals were made through a burning of wood in a heap. Before burning the wood a safety measure must be made especially if the wood is a used board, making sure there is no nail stick to it. Sometimes they do use this kind of material. If it was collected in the forest there should be no problem.

A place was choosing before the ceremony start and the placed choose must be clean up. The cleaning is to make sure there is no stone on the ground and the ground has to be extracted a little in making sure all the stone is taken off. After all this is prepared the event start by burning the wood and waiting until it turns into charcoal. It is depends on the amount of the wood to turn into charcoal. If the amount is bigger than it might take longer time and vice versa.

The leader or we call it “dalang” is the anchor person who are responsible for the event. He has all the full authority of the ceremony from the beginning until the end. If anything mishap is under his responsibility. To be a “dalang,” one should have the knowledge .The knowledge of petua and ilmu of the ceremony. Not many people are lucky to have all the knowledge, only a few were passed the art by the founder. Before starting the event normally the “dalang” will select among the student to assist him. This student will do the necessary things that instructed by the “dalang’.

The participant is the students who are under the supervision of the “dalang” during the event. The student whom are not been selected to assist the “dalang” will wait patiently for the wood to turn into charcoal. Normally for this event s student selected are only a few because the work is not that great. Only to prepare the wood, extracted the ground, burning the wood and the others will be done by the “dalang” in making sure the event is smoothly.

When the wood has turn into charcoal the “dalang” will level the charcoal smoothly. He will recite a doa for the safety of the event while smoothing the charcoal. According to the knowledge after everything is ready he will instructed a student to make a walk on the hot charcoal. Before doing this the student will shake the “dalang” hand asking for the permission and blessing. The student will be instructed to recite “basmallah” seeking the merciful from the ALMighty .

The reason for walking on burning charcoal is to test the spiritual side of the student, whether they have confidence and brave and pure heart. In some event a little burn appears on sole of the students, only a few do face this kind of experience. When this happen the “dalang” will make a medicine and pour it to the little burn to ease the burn. Normally when pour the traditional medicine which is from water reciting with doa immediately it recovered. A “dalang” is not only as a leader conducting the event but he must well equip with knowledge if unnecessary things happen.

Walking on hot charcoal usually done with bath with boiling oil which cooked from coconut milk for the purposed of traditional massage in healing the body from the hard of silat training. All this traditional and ancient Malay custom is such for testing the practitioner along their way learning Silat Seni Gayong. The test is a way of building the spirit, bravery, loyalty, obedient and brotherhood of the art.

Silibus Gayong Dengan Pengesahan Almarhum Dato Meor


 
When talking about syllabus in Silat Seni Gayong, we are always come across a discussion pertaining to the matters. The development of the syllabus is so great that shows Silat Seni Gayong is full of knowledge. As per the process the founder teaching all over the country brilliantly in a different method and techniques without leaving the basic movement of the tapak. If we really understand Silat Seni Gayong we can truly recognised tapak gayong and there will be no doubts about the techniques prevail.

Syllabus maybe various from north to south and west to east but the originality of the movements are on the tapak which only a master can recognised it. No matter what the arrangements of the syllabus are, as long as there are existent of the known tapak gayong there are considered Silat Seni Gayong.

For those who are seeking the syllabus what been recognised or taught by the founder during his years, here I share some of the document pertaining to some of the syllabus in Silat Seni Gayong signed by the late founder. Hope with these document ease some of the doubt pertaining to the art.

In the syllabus it was stated Elakan Serangan,Tenggling Anak Harimau etc. Due to the times the syllabus document  does not in good order and it is a bit difficult to read and sometimes not cleared. Anyway it can be a guideline on what is the syllabus in Silat Seni Gayong that has been verify by the late founder. I hope this sharing is another revelation of the great treasure of the founder which are in my collection for the history and gaze for all Silat Seni Gayong practitioners. 

Maybe there are more treasure of Silat Seni Gayong out there with certain individuals which are valuable for the practitioner who seeking the history of Silat Seni Gayong. With my humble, I hope this small sharing will be the beginning of our understanding of Silat Seni Gayong.

Harimau Pelangi Chula Sakti The Written Document


Salam Ramadhan, approaching of Ramadhan hoping that always will bring prosperous and health internal and external, health with good heart for a good wisdom up ahead. Also wishing the brotherhood ties in Gayong tightens and strong like a pole being tied together. We are one and we will always be one. 

In this month with a full of barakah , I would like to share what really are, as we called or name it Harimau Pelangi Chula Sakti. What is Harimau? Yes, define as tiger in English. What is Pelangi? Defined as a rainbow.What is Chula? Does anyone know? In Silat Seni Gayong it is defined as a stripe of a tiger. And what is Sakti? Sakti is holy or sacred. What is all these? Does anyone understand? In order to reach this stages what criteria that required? So many questions and so many answers will prevail to understand the whole meaning.

Definitely when talking about these it means that someone has achieve as a black belt holder in Silat Seni Gayong. A question, are we really having the criteria. When many seniors were asked about these criteria they will have different answer and understanding. Some will said that there is no guide line for those categories; some will said is just a myth. Many will agreed there is no syllabus for that level. We will come across with many explanations. Does we really know or are we only making an accusations just a frank of ponder from our own perspective. We must really know the history of all this. How is the process of the knowledge were pass thru years by the Founder from one states to others from Pulau Sudong to Air Kuning ,Taiping, as gazetted for the centre for Gayong by the founder. Do we have any supporting documents for all these? Maybe we have and maybe we don’t, because at that time no one has an interest in writing. If compare nowadays, writing is part of the culture for the practitioners of Silat Seni Gayong in sharing their view and knowledge.

Yes, the answer for all these ,that there are a written document pertaining to this matter and in order to hold that level we must and compulsory know the syllabus on one part and the others is the amalan .In the document it was written that it has 9 CATEGORY OF SYLLABUS that we have to pass. Due to the valuable of the documents I will not unveil it publicly in ordered to be misused by not loyalty personnel and I will just list a few:

               1)    Senaman Anak Harimau, which every practitioner familiar              on  these.
                2)   Tapak Harimau 
       3)   Mangsa Harimau Jantan
        4)       Bapak Harimau etc

It is always been a discussions about this and on this Ramadhan I felt it is the time to revealed or exposed the treasure that has been left by the founder for the knowledge of  all Silat Seni Gayong practitioners. May the discussion about this have been answered?

Reason for revealing this documents is not to offence anyone who have worn Harimau Pelangi Chula Sakti but to share the treasure with all as ponder of the standard that we have in Silat Seni Gayong. May this will be the guideline to the Instructor Council (Majlis Gurulatih) to control and really followed the requirements. And for those who have been given or received the belt from the founder or ultimate beneficiary they deserve it and there is no doubt about their capabilities.

Pemberian Almarhum Dato Meor


Guru, Bapa yang disayangi oleh jutaan murid-muridnya samada yang belum berjumpa inikan pula yang pernah dan merasai pegangan tangannya. Menjadi legenda sebutan ahli beladiri baik didalam Negara mahu pun diluar Negara. Tinggal hanya kita mengamit secebis kenangan bersama beliau.Kisah-kisahnya akan kekal menjadi bualan sebagaimana kisah hulubalang Melayu sebelumnya.Beliaulah hulubalang moden Melayu pada abadnya , mengangkat Silat Melayu iaitu Silat Seni Gayong dikenali serata dunia.Beliaulah Almarhum Dato Meor Abdul Rahman bin Uda Hashim, Mahaguru Silat Seni Gayong.

Kenangan bersamanya tidak akan dilupai akan kekal terpahat disanubari.Inikan pula hadiah pemberiannya menjadi tanda mata sebagai ingatan kepadanya.Baik dari Pulau sudong sehinggalah ke Taiping , banyak sungguh khazanahnya.Boleh dimuatkan kedalam muzium khas kalau dikumpulkan.

Pelbagai Kisah Bersama Dato Meor


Kisah # 1

Kenangan bersama Dato Meor memang tetap terpahat dalam ingatan. Alkisahnya semasa beliau sakit di HKL lalu saya melawat beliau.Sampai sahaja di wad VIP yang beliau duduki lantas beliau pun menyapa ...”aaa..orang Selangor...” itulah panggilan yang kerap dilafazkan buat saya bile berjumpa dengan beliau.Saya pun berdiri menyandarkan diri didinding wad tersebut sambil bertanyakan khabar beliau.Kedatangan saya bersama saudara segayong bernama Zailan ditegur oleh Almarhum keatas kami katanya dalam senyuman..” dah! ada girlfriend ya!..” kami pun saling berpandangan dan Zailan pun menganggukkan kepala.

Semenjak lewat 80an beliau telah beberapa kali dimasukan kewad atas menghadapi penyakit kencing manis.Pada suatu ketika hendak dipotong kakinya kerana terlalu kronik tetapi beliau menolak dan sanggup mati namun untuk kakinya dipotong tidak sekali.Semangatnya cukup kuat dan kalau kita fikirkan ada juga benarnya kata beliau itu.Sebagai seorang Mahaguru Silat Seni Gayong beliau tidak boleh berkeadaan cacat walau apapun terjadi kerana ia adalah sebahagian dari perwatakan yang perlu dijaga.

Selalunya apa bila ada lawatan beliau akan duduk tegak diatas katil sambil bercerita dan bertanyakan khabar. Lantas katanya pada kami..”Omar Din ada datang nak melawat tapi Dato tak mahu jumpa ..Dato gayongkan dia....terus dia balik..” sambung Arwah Cikgu Kalsom ..”dengar ada orang jatuh diluar..”Masa kami datang melawat itu keluarganya ada bersama,Arwah Datin Peridah, Arwah Cikgu Kalsom dan agak ramai juga didalam bilik tersebut.Hampir dua jam kami disitu kami pun mohon diri untuk pulang.

Aku Yang Memegang Dagu , Bercermin Mata Saudara Khir Mendengar Pesanan Arwah Dato Meor Dalam Satu Majlis Penyampaian Sandang Di Balai Adat ,Air Kuning , Taiping Pada Tahun 80an


Kisah # 2

Teringat pula saya cuba menyergahnya semasa Kejohanan Silat Sedunia di Kuala Lumpur pada tahun 1987.Kejohanan itu berlangsung di Stadium Negara. Pada malam itulah Arwah Dicky Dzulkarnaen telah berkata sebelum beliau memulakan demonstrasi....”ada orang mengatakan bahawa saya yang bertarung dengan Bruce Lee.Sebenarnya tidak , orangnya ada disini pada malam ini..” Lantas Arwah Dicky Dzulkarnean pun menuju kepentas utama dan terus bersalaman dan mencium tangan Arwah Dato Meor.Pengakuan secara simbolik dengan bersalam selepas kenyataan secara psikologinya membuktkan yang Arwah Dato Meorlah yang bertarung dengan Bruce lee.

Pada ketika itu saya berada lebih kurang tiga baris kerusi dibelakang tempat Arwah Dato duduk.Setelah Silat Seni Gayong melakukan demo pada malam tersebut, Arwah Dato pun mahu pulang , dalam perjalanan kerusi sorongnya ditolak oleh Cikgu Sazali, lalu saya menyergahnya , dengan sepantas kilat Cikgu Sazali melompat kedepan cuba mempertahankan beliau. Bla dilihatnya saya lantas kata Arwah Dato..”orang Selangor..”.Cikgu Sazali pun tersenyum dan kami bersalaman.


Kisah # 3

Teringat pula kisah  semasa di Taiping.Kami sampai unuk menginap diasrama yang disediakan bagi sesiapa yang hendak mempelajari Silat Seni Gayong.Asrama tersebut berhampiran dengan surau yang tinggi kedudukannya.Sampai sahaja di sana selepas bersalaman Arwah telah menunjukan Seni Gayong dengan hanya pegangan dua jari sahaja, telah menyebabkan saudara segayong saya terduduk dan terkencing.Inilah seni saraf, lalu dijelaskanlah sedikit secara pengenalan.Saudara segayong yang menerima tangkapan itu namanya Arwah Rosli sehingga keakhir hayatnya rasa bisa itu kekal ditangannya.Seorang lagi adalah Malik seorang guru sekolah yang saya pun tidak tahu dimana beliau berada sekarang.

Tinggallah kami diasrama itu mandi,tidor, sehingga sampai tempohnya kami pulang ke Selangor.Pada ketika itu masih dalam ingatan saya Cikgu Sazali tidak berada di Taiping, beliau berada di Kelantan kalau tidak silap saya.Menjadi memori ,songkok saya tertinggal diasrama tersebut iaitu songkok hitam lipat yang telah sebati kekal tinggal di Taiping menjadi tanda kenangan saya pernah bermastautin di Air Kuning Taiping dalam mendalami hanya sedikit Silat Seni Gayong ini.Walaupun sedikit tapi rasanya cukup banyak yang saya fahami. Buat kata beliau dalam amalan menteranya yang diberikan pada kami: 

                          Ku-jilat  tuboh mu dari darah sabuku
                          Asal dari ayer susu ku
                          Manis ku rasa bukan mangsa ku
                          Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
                          Harimau Pelangi Chula Sakti nama Bapak-ku

Semoga dicururi rahmat keatas rohnya dan roh zuriat-zuriat Gayong.Amin
